The tennis portion is horribly broken to where the game just doesn't seem to understand who to give points to and when. It is buggy as heck and would completely crash the game to the Switch main menu a few times (including midway through the final gauntlet of the game). All of this would still put the game at maybe 3.5 stars? I cannot in good faith recommend this game though in its current state. The story still has some funny bits, but feels like a massive step down from the prior entry. The other new sports here are typically relegated to just a few mini games played in a new area in between playing some of the golf. Tennis is pretty largely built out to where the entire tennis portion will take several hours.
The core golf portions of this game are still entertaining, but it's too few and far between. The developers tried to go with a larger scope this time around, and forgot to make the rest of the game fun while doing so. Sports Story is the follow up to the surprise hit Golf Story. Sports Story is easily the biggest disappointment for me from the Switch library. It feels like a game they just didn't have the skills to finish properly. It was not the final challenge acumulating all your knowledge into a fitting finale.ĭespite all this. Except you don'tĪs the game does away with the controls and makes them all target practice golf style challenges, like hit the volleyball into the marked out area, hit your fishing lure into a marked out area, etc etc. In the final mission, you play all 10 sports in an epic tournament. It's not even clear that you've actually beaten the game! I had to check a walkthrough.
Many of the other sports are paper thin and felt like trow away additions made to justify the Sports Story name. The golf is still as solid as in Golf Story. You could argue this is better than being sign posted everywhere, but being lost is not fun to me. I got frequently lost from things not being explained well and a lack of map or way point markers. The writing is still witty and kept me engaged. I did see a number of graphical glitches, the occasional unusual or inaccurate result, a few spelling mistakes. I didn't experience a single game breaking bug or crash throughout. That's not exactly a glowing recommendation is it, so let me explain. Well I didn't hate it and most of the bugs are superficial.
